About Tonkinese

There had been some conjecture about the history of the Tonkinese cat. But all our research has shown us that the Tonkinese is in fact a very old breed. In fact, that the pointed , mink and sepia (solid) were originally three variations of the one cat. And that our modern day Siamese , Burmese and now Tonkinese are there descendants. There are examples of what are believed to be the original forms of these cats in the ancient Thai literature as far back as the 1500’s and may be even earlier. Our experience with breeding generations of Tonk to Tonk has show us that they do tend to stay true to “type” and only the coat type will vary . It used to be said that pointed cats would be revert to Siamese etc, but this tends not to be the case. With careful selection of breeding stock in the early generations it is possible to breed a Tonkinese that stays “true to type”.

Tonkinese are gregarious , affectionate and very intelligent. And love to be a part or your life. They are very adaptable , do well with children .Especially as and only cat , they will “slot themselves” in amongst the kids and be quite happy. If you are at work all day it is important to consider having two kittens , as they are not the kind of cat that can be left alone for 8 hours or so a day every day. They will miss you and get very lonely. They will still love you just as much, you will just have two kittens on your knee instead of one ! or one each !

Tonk’s are often called the “dog” of the cat world, they love to fetch , they will follow you around and be interested in everything! And will be quite tolerant of a dog as a companion and play mate. As long as they are introduced in the right way they will be fine. Some people will even buy there kitten and pup at the same time. Which is the ideal way to go. So , if you are after a cat that will talk to you , and be a genuine companion , that is intelligent and affectionate , then the Tonk is the one for you . Once you have experienced the personality of a Tonkinese you will always come back for more.
