Breed Profile: Australian Mist Dr David Richardson August 2005

 History of the Australian Mist

This breed was a designer breed developed in the 1970’s and 80’s, from Burmese Abyssinian and Australian shorthair cats. They were first known as Spotted Mists, but the name was changed to Australian Mist in the late 1990’s to allow for Marble variants. Due to meticulous documentation the development of this breed is recorded accurately, with all current Australian Mists being able to be traced back to Foundation Cats.

 Description of the Australian Mist

The Aussie mist is a well balanced cat of moderate type, with no extremes. They have an open facial expression, and a firm feel with rounded contours. The head is broad & large with well spaced ears. In profile there should be a dip but no break. The nose is broadish, the chin firm, and the whisker pads strong. Adult males may be jowly. Ears are moderate to large, wide based, rounded tips and forward tilt. Outline of the ears continues the modified wedge of the face. Eyes are large and lustrous, with straight upper lid and round lower lid. Eyes are widely spaced and slightly slanted and must be green – any shade, though Light yellow or Citrine are acceptable up to two years of age.

Body is medium large in size and length, firm and muscular; the chest broad and round. The cat is heavier than it appears. The legs are proportional, hind legs longer leading to to neat oval paws. Tail is thick with little tapering.

Pattern may be Spotted or Marbled. Spots are random any size or shape; coat has three levels of definition: ground colour, paler than pattern and pattern. Spots and Marble appear through a misty veil caused by random tickingng

What I am Looking for when Judging an Aussie Mist

I’m looking for a green eyed non extreme cat, with a marble or spotted pattern veiled by ticking. I’m looking for a broad rufoused nose, generous rounded ears set widely on the broad head. I’m looking for a firm body, rounded chest, a broad tail with little taper; I’m feeling for weight in the cat.

 Scoring the Australian Mist Cat

Coat is worth 40 points, head 30 and body 20.
